When I try to open firefox the User Account Control window pops up and asks if I would like to allow it to makes changes

I can sit on it all night pressing "yes" and it just keeps opening. I have made sure that "Run as Administrator is not checked in properties, and it will not let me deselect compatibility mode. It also has the UAC logo as part of the icon now, and I don't believe it was there before.

Check that Firefox isn't set to run as Administrator.

You can open the Properties of the Firefox desktop shortcut via the right-click context menu and check the "Compatibility" tab.

Make sure all items are deselected in the "Compatibility" tab of the Properties window.

  • Privilege Level: "Run this program as Administrator" should not be selected
  • "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" should not be selected

Also check the Properties of the firefox.exe program in the Firefox program folder.

I have followed these instructions. It does have compatibility mode checked, but will not let me uncheck it.

Try to uninstall and reinstall Firefox as a normal user.

Do a clean reinstall of the current Firefox release and delete the Firefox program folder before installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.

It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling

  • (64-bit Firefox) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
  • (32-bit Firefox) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"

Your personal data like bookmarks is stored in the Firefox profile folder, so you won't lose personal data when you reinstall or update Firefox, but make sure NOT to remove personal data when you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.
