Send tab from Android to other devices works but 2 of the 4 device names are blank. The list shows "[username]'s Firefox on " and then no name. All WIndows 10.

One of the Windows 10 devices shows as ASUSLaptop but the other 2 windows 10 devices' names on the android device are blank They shoulld say something like DESKTOP-ABCDE1 AND DESKTOP-UVWXY9 as those are their names. When sending a tab from any of the desktop devices ALL device names are shown complete. Sync is current. Admittedly, I have not logged out of firefox in a day or so but "things" do seem to be working otherwise.

Voltagex appears to have the same issue. Did not see that posting until today.

I have logged out of the Android Firefox and powered off and back on and logged back in to Firefox but it did not change the send tab failure to list other devices by name.

Hi

When (on a desktop copy of Firefox) you go to manage devices under https://accounts.firefox.com do you see the devices listed with names or without? Are you able to attach some small screenshots of the icons shown as a reply?

Hi Seburo, Yes, when on the desktop, FF shows the full names. See attached.

However, on the Android phone (Samsung Galaxy S8) opening menu and clicking on the paper airplane icon it lists the devices but as you can see, it does not display the full names of DESKTOP-9JQ or DESKTOP-K4C.

All devices are on the same network. The two with missing names on the Android are on ethernet and the phone is on wifi. It has been awhile but I am pretty sure when 9JQ was on wifi the names were not displayed correctly whether the phone was 2.4 or 5 gHz connected.

It's a mystery but I sure appreciate you checking this out! Hope you or others have some ideas! Thanks,

Hi

It looks like this only happens when the device name is quite long. Can you also try it on Firefox Preview (available from the Google Play Store)?

more options

Firefox Preview shows part of the devices' names but the names are only a bit more but still partial and followed by "...". So it shows 5 devices plus an icon for "Send to all devices". Regarding the devices in question an icon might be labeled "ADMIN's Firefox on De..." but it still doesn't show the name sufficiently for me to determine which device I might be sending it to. Changing orientation to sideways doesn't display any differently.

I realize that having the same username of multiple devices only confuses the issue more but the real problem remains that the name is not fully displayed. Your are probably spot-on correct that the length is the issue but Firefox has chosen to display "USERNAME's Firefox on " and not left room for the device name which I did not choose -- Windows 10 did.

I am not planning on changing the device names on my devices to accomodate this issue until I determine if FF is going to fix this problem.

Do you think putting this issue on this forum is an adequate way to give FF feedback? Is there a better way to give feedback? I'd like to help by at least reporting it somehow.

Hi

If you file this as a bug for Firefox Preview about long device names, that would be awesome. The bug reporting form is at

https://github.com/mozilla-mobile/fenix/issues/new?assignees=&labels=%F0%9F%90%9E+bug&template=---bug-report.md&title=%5BBug%5D

Please note that the bug would be open for all to see. If you want me to file it, please let me know.

Hi Seburo, The problem is actually on both the Android FF as well as on Preview. I will report it using the link you provided but is a different link available for "regular" Android FF?

If so, would you mind sending it to me as well?

Thanks

Hiya

We use a different platform for reporting bugs in Firefox for Android:

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/home

It should walk through to the right place to report the issue and you should get updates on what is happening to the issue that you are reporting.
