I need to stop firefox from saving each and every window

I have a firefox that saves each and every window it displays. I would prefer having only the existing windows in my system. For instance, when I click on Firefox and goto all windows there is one only, not 2 to 50 of them. This happens with only one machine and I want to stop it.

I thought I had already sent this but I couldn't find it.

Thoughts?

I am using, right now, a machine that does NOT save windows. if it does I have no idea where they might be. I do not know why the window saving happens. For instance, I goto Thunderbird. When I come back to Firefox it is on a brand new window. If I remove this new window I am back in my original window. This happens, incidentally (haven't check all but some), and if I leave one of them I get a brand new window, when I go back, with every other program I run as well.

This creates a huge mess if you do not exit the programs and get rid of all the windows. Its also interesting is that, when its saving all windows, that when you click on software on my Dash to Dock, it will tell me how many windows it contains.

I am also not convinced this is a firefox problem given that it saves windows for EVERYTHING when its set to do so. I just wish I could figure out where the setting is.

Thoughts?

1. Check Firefox Settings

While Firefox itself doesn't have a specific setting to control window saving behavior, you can check a few settings that might help:

   Open New Windows in Tabs:
       Go to Settings (or Options).
Under the General section, look for the Tabs section.
Ensure that "Open links in tabs instead of new windows" is checked. This can help reduce the number of new windows opened.

2. Check System Settings

Since you mentioned that this behavior occurs with other applications as well, it may be related to your operating system settings. Here are a few things to check:

   Window Management Settings:
Depending on your operating system (Linux, Windows, etc.), there may be settings related to how windows are managed. Look for settings related to "Window Management" or "Desktop Environment" in your system settings.
   Check for Window Manager Behavior:
If you are using a Linux distribution with a specific desktop environment (like GNOME, KDE, etc.), check the window manager settings. Some window managers have options for how new windows are handled.

3. Disable Session Restore

If Firefox is restoring previous sessions, you can disable this feature:

   Go to Settings > General.
Scroll down to the Startup section.
Ensure that "Open tabs from the previous session" is not selected.

4. Check for Extensions

Sometimes, browser extensions can cause unexpected behavior. Disable all extensions to see if the issue persists:

Click on the menu button and go to Add-ons and Themes.
Disable all extensions and restart Firefox.

5. Create a New Firefox Profile

If the issue continues, creating a new Firefox profile can help:

Type about:profiles in the URL bar and press Enter.
Click on Create a New Profile, follow the prompts, and then launch the new profile.

6. Check for System Updates

Ensure that your operating system and all applications are up to date. Sometimes, bugs in the operating system can cause unexpected behavior. 7. Reinstall Firefox

If none of the above solutions work, consider uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox. Make sure to back up your bookmarks and any important data before doing so. 8. Investigate Other Applications

Since you mentioned that this behavior occurs with other applications as well, consider checking the settings of those applications. Look for options related to window management or session restoration.
