Thunderbird 78.11.0 (64b) Update issues
TBird upgrades are killing me by changing my profile to one w/o all my mail client settings, and deleting/nullifying all my calendars. It has happened every update since late last year and, while I've figured out how to change back to my desired profile, correct the settings, and re-create my calendars data, it is much too much effort. This is the third time I've asked for help and explanation, and have not received anything of value. If this entry does not result in help, I'll be leaving TBird and Firefox which I have used and supported since the beginning. Why can these products not just update w/o changing the current data, or at least, advise on how to address these unwanted changes when the updates come.

re : If this entry does not result in help, I'll be leaving TBird and Firefox which I have used and supported since the beginning. A bit over dramatic do you not think. I cannot think of any reason to say that to other Thunderbird users who are offering free help in a voluntary capacity.
But, I've spent some time looking into this to see what has been said in the past for all those times you mention. I've looked for all three of your requests regarding recent updates losing profile etc and this is the only one. I did find one about calendar data but that was back in version 60 in march 2019 - over two years ago and you did not respond to the person who offered help. Profile : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/user/mmaz/questions So maybe you have another profile which you have been using and that might explain why I cannot find anything except this question.
However, I'm not quite sure what help you require as you state "I've figured out how to change back to my desired profile, correct the settings, and re-create my calendars data", so it does not sound like you have an issue at this moment. Is that correct ?
There is usually no issues with updates if people are using the default location for profile storage, although considering the thousands of people who get an update and something goes squiffy, it is only a small number and the reasons can vary.
However, you have not really provided much information. I've no idea what OS you use, or what version you are currently using, I'm presuming you are not using Portable Thunderbird and generally it is presumed you are using all the default settings and storage location because you have not stated otherwise.
If you are repeatedly suffering from a problem after each update, I'm wondering if this is because you are not using the default location for profile storage.
There are files within the 'profile name' folder that need to be updated as well as the program itself. If they are not updated to say that profile can work with the newly updated profile then Thunderbird may stop using it and as a result will create a new empty default profile. This is due to the profile per installation which was created back when version 68 came out.
Toad-Hall, thanks for the response. I didn't respond to the last volunteer bec it was not clear to me how to do so. I'm running Wins10 64b, and my TB Local Profile is in the place TB put it in the beginning: C:\Users\M&M\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\1c1ahd7b.default-release\Mail\inbound.att.net and \Local Folders
The updates keeps changing my Server Settings Local Directory to C:\Users\M&M\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\1c1ahd7b.default-release\Mail\inbound.att.net-1 , and creating new sub-folders with empty contents
The change leaves all my original profile information in the profile so I learned to change the Local Directory setting back to the original, and delete the "-1" items in the directory. This allows me to save some of my Mail folders, but I've now realized some sub-folders and files have been deleted, so I am still losing mail. Since I have my server set to auto download all mail on startup, I then have to stop auto mail download and send all new mail back to myself as well as renew all my TB view and formatting settings
As for the calendars, I import my Yahoo Calendars into my Dropbox folder, and they are untouched, But all the TB calendars are deleted, and I have to re-create each calendar from scratch in TB and reload them which is tedious and time-consuming as is the mail re-creation process.
What exasperates me so much is I do not understand why this is happening to me, not on every update, but multiple, including 78.11.0, which seems to be every few months????????? It seems to me this all this only started last year sometime, but it may have been before that. Since I've never relocated my profile, I can't believe this is not occurring to many, many others!!
Between the effort to recover, and the lost mail that occurs, I have had it, and I lost sight of the fact that I was addressing my extreme consternation to volunteers when I said I'll be leaving TB and FF if I can't get it stopped. I will certainly appreciate anything you can advise on how to make it stop - thanks.
