Windows 10 202H, current Excel, Thunderbird 78.10.0

Before sending email, I often open attached files to double-check that each is the one I mean to send, it opens on page one, and so on.

Recently, Thunderbird began putting up a tombstone with the following language EVERY time: "xlsx could not be opened, because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences."

A search for help here delivers over 1,000 possibilities. At 79, I don't think I can spend my time left examining that many answers for the WRONG topic.

This is my second request for assistance.

Chosen solution

go to option and look in General for the heading File and Attachments search in the box for excel and remove every entry (Down arrow on the action side) Then try again. It would appear you copy of excel has moved or been uninstalled, this will allow you to restart where to find excel when you open a file.

Well Done, Matt !!

Thank you.

Excel was onboard. Ran when I called. Never would have thought to remove its 2 entries and try again. This time Thunderbird asked if Excel was OK. Said yes.

Then went back and on the 2nd test, chose to perform that action automatically going forward. Perfect.
