No network access possible after start of Thunderbird
We have two Win7 Pro computers in a local network, behind a network router from Deutsche Telekom. Both have Thunderbird running multiple pop3 email accounts with various freemail providers. Win7 is set to automatic DNS. DHCP is provided by the router.
One computer has started showing the following symptoms: Computer has full network and internet access until Thunderbird starts. At this point, communication with the second computer, the router or the internet is no longer possible. (Network timeout).
All emailing stops on this computer (network timeout reported by Thunderbird)
Repairs so far : (without any improvement) --Set Win7 DNS for the network adaptor to 1.1.1.1 (also tried OpenDNS and Cloudflare) --Thunderbird to use no proxy, system proxy or browser proxy settings. --remove all add-ins; however the Bitdefender add-in has no removal button. --using alternate browsers (firefox, chrome) makes no difference
ipconfig does not show any different parameters between before and after Thunderbird starting.
Once the network has been lost, the only way to regain it is a reboot. This works until Thunderbird is started.
Only repair working currently is to start Thunderbird in safe mode with all add-ins disabled. Running like this, full email connections are possible.
I don't see what changed on this computer other than the normal Windows patching. No record of any installations.
Any suggestions why these symptoms started and how I can get rid of them would be gratefully received !!

Hi Matt, Win7 in Safe Mode showed that Thunderbird works -- but the Safe Mode prevented Bitdefender AV from loading.
I deleted the AV software, reg cleaned and after the usual reboots, installed the same AV (Bitdefender Security 2019). It has updated itself and the Thunderbird issues are no longer present.
Thanks for your help !

Sounds like an anti virus issue, or a network drivers one. But I would be betting on security software.
oh and you have to ask why I point to your anti virus? it installs an add-on and breaks the standards required for Thunderbird add-on by having no remove button. Apparently you have a virus. Bitdefender.
Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled from the help menu. That should disable the bit defender virus. But it might not. Like a good virus it may be injected into the running process by it's dropper program.
Thanks for replying, however I had already mentioned that running in safe mode does remove the symptoms.
I will start a similar case over with the folks at Bitdefender. Maybe they've seen this before.
Odd that the second computer doesn't show this effect...
Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX
- If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.

Similar case to me,
Thunderbird works fine on ubuntu and Windows XP
Then i upgrade those machines to Windows 7 and some are windows 10, they have the same problem "Connecting to server" then timeouts after several seconds
Things i've done already: 1. Add Static IP (Failed) 2. Run on Safe mode (Failed) 3. Add profile to exclusions (Failed) 4. Disable entire Windows Defender and SmartScreen (Failed) 5. Remove unused services and features from windows (Failed) 6. The only tool i use for this time so far. cmd> ipconfig /release and / renew. Yes, yes it connects me to my pop3 mailserver but in some cases it doesn't work. unless ill connect my thunderbird to internet - and Yes i have (2) existing connections on thunderbird mail server, 1 for the Workstations here on company (Accessed locally.(No internet)), and the other are my public IP address.
-If connected to internet it works perfectly -but locally.. its totally rekted
since windows XP is not supported on latest Moboards gen8 and gen. Cant roll back to that now.
I would look at your DNS configuration If I was you. Thunderbird can not find a server unless it is registered in DNS. Your local domain also needs a DNS server that registers the local ip range, even it is it only a router or ADSL/Cable modem. Just because windows can "see" a machine, the Thunderbird copy can not. If you have not DNS you might have to resort to IP addresses instead of server names.
If you have a proxy servoce (including from an anti virus vendor) then email will probably not work because most proxies block the ports used for mail. They only proxy the common WEB ports not all ports.
