HTML5 audio does not decode on sites like Soundcloud

more options

Hi everyone,

Been having this problem for a few weeks now, and after scouring support pages, I'm unable to find a solution. I'm running Win7 64-bit, and have had this problem since Firefox 28.0. I uninstalled Firefox completely tonight (erased private data, etc.) and re-installed with 29.0, but am still having the problem.

Sometimes when I try to play a song on Soundcloud, it does not load for me.

For example, I can play the first and third songs in this play list, but the other ones do not load: https://soundcloud.com/gldncollective/sets/sprng-2014

When I click on the second song in the that playlist, I get the following errors in the developer console: ---

GET https://soundcloud.hs.llnwd.net/GNFASQII7bBU.128.mp3 [HTTP/1.1 206 Partial Content 102ms]

Media resource https://soundcloud.hs.llnwd.net/GNFASQII7bBU.128.mp3?AWSAccessKeyId=AKIAJNIGGLK7XA7YZSNQ&Expires=1399434315&Signature=xTy9%2B7K7SqkL6arnfPbjI8ZIH6g%3D&e=1399434315&h=d3d00771ee7b54f2f939e0221aa02a48 could not be decoded. sprng-2014

"HTML5_AUDIO_DECODE" tm-GXV5-124c0c6a.js:2

Another link that I cannot play: https://soundcloud.com/djschmolli/sing-it-back-black-magic-woman

which gives this error: ---

GET https://ec-media.soundcloud.com/PnbbyozYwFl7.128.mp3 [HTTP/1.1 206 Partial Content 140ms]

Media resource https://ec-media.soundcloud.com/PnbbyozYwFl7.128.mp3?f10880d39085a94a0418a7ef69b03d522cd6dfee9399eeb9a52508956bfbba3ec17ff4e730844dbaa37bdfbb3571bba55bac388f45e16f43eab51bedbb629ec3522cfc9910&AWSAccessKeyId=AKIAJNIGGLK7XA7YZSNQ&Expires=1399434210&Signature=tZYys5NX4kKG9Yy2PKhFsJk%2F0rY%3D could not be decoded. sing-it-back-black-magic-woman

"HTML5_AUDIO_DECODE" tm-GXV5-124c0c6a.js:2

---

My Flash plug-ins are up to date, and the status of AdBlocker Plus does not fix the problem. All youtube videos work, and so do sites like Twitch. I can also stream audio from sites like NPR without any problem. I have tried to revert Firefox to a default state with 28.0, but that did not fix the problem.

I am able to play the full playlist via Chrome on this machine, but obviously prefer Firefox. :) I can also play anything on my laptop which runs Firefox 28.0. That machine is also running Win7 64-bit

Any help would be much appreciated!

You can try to disable the HTML5 media player and use the Flash player instead if there is a problem with some of the mp3 files.

You can test that by toggling these two prefs to false on the about:config page

  • media.windows-media-foundation.enabled
  • media.directshow.enabled

Hello,

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions and some Preferences.

  • Open websites will not be saved in Firefox versions lower than 25.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

Hi Deba,

Thanks for your help!

I've tried another reset with this new installation of Firefox 29.0, but it did not help :(

The same playlist I linked above behaves as I've noted in the original post.

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache. In order to try to fix these problems, the first step is to clear both cookies and the cache. Note: This will temporarily log you out of all sites you're logged in to. To clear cache and cookies do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > History > Clear recent history or (if no Firefox button is shown) go to Tools > Clear recent history.
  2. Under "Time range to clear", select "Everything".
  3. Now, click the arrow next to Details to toggle the Details list active.
  4. From the details list, check Cache and Cookies and uncheck everything else.
  5. Now click the Clear now button.

Further information can be found in the Clear your cache, history and other personal information in Firefox article.

Hi Deba,

No, clearing my cookies and cache does not fix the problem.

Cheers!

Hello,

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings and disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).

(If you're using an added theme, switch to the Default theme.)

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu by clicking on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item:
FirefoxSafeMode

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode" Safe Mode Fx 15 - Win

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

Thank you.

Hi ranroll,

I was thinking that was a user.js issue but apparently it isn't. Looks like all the general troubleshooting steps were tried with no success. :( Don't worry. We'll get this up and running ASAP.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

Hi Moses,

Thanks for your reply.

I created a new profile as instructed by your links, but the problem persists.

Cheers to all!

Cor-el,

This has fixed the problem for me! I am now able to play any song on Soundcloud without issue.

Will I have to keep these preferences turned off in future installations?

I guess I still don't understand why this problem hasn't occured on my laptop, but I assume this will be worked out sometime.

Thank you so much!!

I'm not sure why this would happen with some mp3 files and the HTML5 media player.
You may be missing some codecs to play these specific mp3 formats as there are decoding errors according the the error messages you posted above.

Something MUST be wrong with the Soundcloud site.

When you bootup in SAFE MODE AND you've disabled all your plugins....and you STILL get their popup blockers saying: "It looks like you have a Flash blocker browser setting or extension. Please enable Flash to hear this track."

Yep...something wrong at the Circle K @ SoundCloud.com

Hi kimbakat, SoundCloud seems to display a mix of HTML5-playable tracks and Flash-playable tracks. I don't think you can force the site to use HTML5 players for all tracks; you will need to allow it to run Flash for some of the content.
