AOL setup on MX Linux... fails authentication

Fred Allen

I have multiple email accounts on Thunderbird (on MX Linux)... att.net, gmail.com and aol.com

While traveling without my computer, i had to reset my aol password on my iphone.

Now that I'm back at my desk, and being unable to find how to change the aol password on Thunderbird, I deleted the AOL imap account and have tried much of today to add a new AOL account.

In the past, I could create an 'app password' within AOL (browser) and use that password in Thunderbird... but that is no longer working.

Any guidance/suggestions?

I am running the latest Thunderbird version 140.17.0esr (64-bit) available in my MX Linux.

Thanks for the replies.... how to change password will be helpful in the future.

When I use config editor (now having only a gmail account) for mailnews.oath.usePrivateBrowser, my options are Boolean (selected), Number or String. I do not have options for True or False. I was planning to try "String" and "Number" but... Oddly, after i added my AOL account today and without changing ANYTHING, the AOL account added to Thunderbird perfectly... no issues. So maybe all along, the issue was on the AOL side?

I failed to add these details...

I enter my full name, email address (@aol.com) and app password.. Thunderbird finds the server configuration details... i verify everything looks correct, including imap.aol.com and smtp.aol.com and port numbers 993 / 465... SSL/TLS and OAuth2

When I click DONE, a new window opens showing AOL at the top and asking me to "Review Access Details" (AOL email read/write). I check the box to "agree to the OoenID and OAuth Terms and click NEXT... and the next screen says "Something Went Wrong...Try Again. If you're a developer, try submitting a different request"....

I haven't gotten a reinstallation of an AOL email account to work on Thunderbird (MX Linux 25.3), but I installed the EVOLUTION email app and added my email accounts and thus far, everything is working.

Maybe the latest version of Thunderbird on MX Linux 25.3 is no longer compatible with AOL authentication?

re: Now that I'm back at my desk, and being unable to find how to change the aol password on Thunderbird,

As a heads up it here:

  • Settings > Privacy & Security
  • Passwords section
  • click on 'Saved Passwords'
  • Click on 'Show Passwords'

Usually there are two lines for each account - incoming and outgoing (unless account uses Authentication Method: Oauth - in which case there is only one)

  • right click on each line in turn and select 'Edit Password'
  • completely clear all content and then type the correct password.
  • Click on 'Close'

Exit Thunderbird, allow a few moments for background processes to complete all updates to file. Start Thunderbird. It should use the password you entered for the account.

I check the box to "agree to the OoenID and OAuth Terms and click NEXT... and the next screen says "Something Went Wrong...Try Again. If you're a developer, try submitting a different request".

The following fixed it for another user. At the top right of the Thunderbird window, click the menu button ≡ > Settings - General - Config Editor, and set the pref mailnews.oauth.usePrivateBrowser to true (if it's set to false for you). https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1609676

To quote Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boolean_data_type

The Boolean is a data type that has one of two possible values representing the two truth values of logic: true and false. It is named after George Boole, who first defined an algebraic system of logic in the mid-19th century.

Hi, Thanks... I understand what Boolean means, but the prior reply suggested I changed the option from FALSE to TRUE and my Thunderbird does not have the option, at least as far as I can tell. I only see the option to select Boolean, Number or String. But I suppose it doesn't matter, since the problem disappeared, apparently resolved on the AOL side without me having to do anything.

You know what boolean means and your are still looking for a true or false answer. Yet Boolean is true or false by definition. So yes you are dealing with a boolean value.and once you add it you only have two options True or False..

Matt, I'm sorry if I was not clear. My question was directed to Christ1, not to you. Yes, I understand boolean. My question is more specific, since Christ1 suggested I change the boolean VALUE from FALSE to TRUE, so I was just wondering if his Thunderbird actually provides the option to change this value, since all I can do is select Boolean (or Number or String). Fred

My suggestion was based solely on this support topic. https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1609676

I'd expect the pref to exist, why you don't have it, I don't know. Another possibility is you misspelled the pref when entering it into the search field. Then TB would prompt you to create a new one. Whether flipping the pref helps or not, I cannot speak from personal experience, as I don't see any of the odd issues folks seem to have with OAuth authentication.

In any case, since your problem has been resolved, this is a moot point by now.
