After installing the new version of Adobe Flash Player yesterday, Firefox would not load most sites except in basic html, which I understand is the right term for all lists of text mostly on the left hand side of the screen. They open fine in Google Chrome and IE. I tried restoring to two days ago, today I uninstalled Firefox and re-installed it, I tried several possible solutions in the support forums, but nothing has worked. I prefer Firefox but will drop it if I cannot get this resolved quickly. Note: I am only assuming that the new flash player was to blame as this happened immediately afterwards. I don't really even know what it does, it is just one of those things that pops up and says it needs to be upgraded to the newest version from time to time.

The Flash player plugin allows certain types of media to be displayed in web pages. Otherwise, you get a blank rectangle. Usually Flash wouldn't affect Firefox's ability to load style sheets, images, and other elements that add to the plain text of the page.

You could try the Reset feature. This duplicates certain key data from your active settings folder into a new one, bypassing some add-ons and custom settings. Your plugins (including Flash) will still be active, but could be disabled manually if you like.

More information in this article: Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings. Please note that an old settings file will appear on your desktop. You might want to keep this around for a while in case you need to salvage something from it.

Does it make any difference?

Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.

"Clear the Cache":

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

You can also check the settings for Firefox in your security software (firewall, anti-virus) to make sure that they aren't blocking content.

That did the trick, thank you so much. Hopefully I will remember this if I have a problem in the future! Best Regards, jmcqueen
