Thunderbird’s connection to one of my gmail accounts failed today.

I removed the account and then tried to add it again to Thunderbird.

When logging in using a Google generated App password, I receive the following message:

"400. That’s an error. The server cannot process the request because it is malformed. It should not be retried. That’s all we know."

OAuth2 is in place, and I’ve carried out all other recommended checks I can find on your website. My other Gmail accounts are working fine.

Please can you help? Many thanks.

The other day, one of my hard disks went on the blink and became very slow to access (minutes, not seconds). At the time, many of my email accounts were storing the mail on that disk. I've copied all the files off to a working disk and dumped the old disk. I changed Thunderbird to point to the new location. Now, all of the accounts are working again, except one (using POP). Thunderbird simply won't check email on that account, and the last email shown is 4 days ago. When I click Get Messages and select the account, nothing seems to happen. Nothing shows up in the Activity Manager. The account is definitely working on the server-side, as I can view it in K-9 on my phone, and another account on the same POP server is working fine in Thunderbird. Outgoing email on the account sends fine.

I've tried various suggestions, including wiping my password database (Thunderbird did not prompt me for that account) but nothing seems to make a difference. I wonder if it's to do with the Inbox (which is a hefty 7GB mbox file). I tried Repair Folder on the Inbox but it did not make a difference; Thunderbird still won't check the email. I did briefly try renaming the Inbox file to Old-Inbox but Thunderbird still wouldn't check the email. I want to make sure I retain all my old emails (they are all showing, so it doesn't look like the file got corrupted). Does anyone have any suggestions for how to get the email working again without losing all the mailboxes?

After upgade Thunderbird to 115.0.1 version, all my outlook.com email accounts encounter an error:

Warning: Potential Security Risk Ahead Thunderbird detected a potential security threat and did not continue to account.live.com. If you visit this site, attackers could try to steal information like your passwords, emails, or credit card details.

What is the problem? Doesn't TB support outlook.com accounts anymore?

thanks.

For some reason after running a Windows 8.1 System Restore, Thunderbird no longer worked. It kept producing the following message: "Thunderbird is already running, but not responding. To open a new window, you must close the existing Thunderbird process or restart your system."

The problem was that Thunderbird was actually NOT running. Nor did it appear in Task Manager so I could end the Task. Restarting the system did not eliminate the problem. Nevertheless, I decided to save the Thunderbird Profile for the email messages that it contained.

I then downloaded and reinstalled Thunderbird and replaced the Profile with a version I had saved several weeks ago. This solved the problem as far as Thunderbird working is concerned. However, I lost all of the pop emails after date of the weeks old profile I had saved. The missing emails were from two pop email accounts.

In the Profile that was causing the initial problem and that I saved, the missing emails appear to be present. However, if I copy the Mail folder from that Profile and replace the Mail folder in the Profile that now works, the emails do not appear. Rather, only the names of the two pop email accounts appear with none of the account folders, i.e. no Inbox, Drafts, Sent or Trash folders and their contents.

Is it possible to copy certain files/folders from the problem Profile and replace those in the Profile that works in order to recover the "lost" emails. Copying all of the content from the Problem Profile simply causes the same issue with the "Thunderbird is already running" message.

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro (64bit). The current version of Thunderbird that is now working is 91.10.0 (64 bit). Assistance to recover the missing emails would be greatly appreciated as some of them are rather important. Thank you in advance for considering my issues.

Thunderbird v102 Win10 IMAP THE PROBLEM: A. Tbird connects to IMAP but has a bouncing ball to the left of the Inbox. B. So I pull down TOOLS > activity mgr > and the thermometer is stuck on indexing or it sticks on “determining which messages to index.” C. I try to check mail and it’s very very very slow to open the Password Dialog Box. I don’t know if it’ll open or not so I click around and somehow eventually it opens. Barely checks or sends mail and is time consuming. D. Pull down TOOLS > activity mgr > and the Indexing thermometer stays stuck even if I leave it for 30 minutes. E. I should mention I do have a lot of folders and subfolders with a lot of messages.

WHAT I’VE DONE TO SOLVE IT: 1. Ran tbird in safe mode but no improvement. No addons or extensions are installed/enabled. 2. It’s IMAP, so I turned off all the email apps on the iphone but no improvement. 3. ESET antiviral is set to Exclude Thunderbird so I’m thinking it’s not ESET. Ran an ESET scan but found no threats. 4. I cleared the cache. Go to TOOLS > clear history > clear everything 5. Increase the cache size. Go to Tools | Settings | General | Disk Space and checkbox ON "Override automatic cache management" and change the number in "Use up to ___ MB of space for the cache" to 1024. Restart Tbird but no improvement. Restart Win10 but no improvement. 6. I selected a folder I know has lots of messages in it and rightclicked > properties > 780 messages, repair the .msf file. It re downloaded 1350 messages. Restarted Win10 but no improvement. 7. I've read that if I start Win10 in “SafeMode w/Networking” and Tbird connects and speeds up then there may be a software conflict but I did not do that cause I don’t mess with Win10. Never had a conflict before and didn’t make any changes except for Win10 and cCleaner updates as they became available. It's been 6 hrs and I can't figure it out. 8. The next thing for me to do is some house cleaning and delete some messages but that's painstaking and I have no idea if that'll help or not.

Five days ago, Thunderbird 102.6.1 on Windows 10 stopped saving messages in my Sent folder. Messages sent to myself are not saved in the Sent folder, but they are delivered to my Inbox.

I followed this advice, "Go to Tools > Account Settings > Copies & Folders. Tick the Place a copy in, select Other then point to the Sent folder of the affected account. Do the same for the Drafts & Templates section. " but it has not solved the problem.

I'd be very grateful for help to fix this.

Hello. For the last week or so, Thunderbird has become unusable for me. Shortly after doing anything, such as clicking on a message, it hangs and I can get nothing else done. If I go to another window, and then back to thunderbird, it redraws the window frame, but with transparent window contents (the underlying screen is visible). My "top" linux command shows that thunderbird is eating 100% CPU (on only one thread of the multithreaded 12th Gen core i7).

I've looked at the Activity Manager before the freezing, and nothing untoward is reported. After the freeze, Activity just opens as another transparent window, so I don't know if anything is happening.

I tried resetting the global index as was suggested in another post here. It indexed all my boxes without any error but was not changed afterwards.

I'd really appreciate suggestions here. I'm not aware of having done anything such as a change of settings, so it has me beaten at the moment. I've been using Thunderbird for years without seeing this before.

Kenneth.

Hi! I'm using Thunderbird with English interface in non-English-speaking country - it's easier for me. Recently, I've found Return Receipt messages from me (if I got e-mail with RR request) written only in English. I would like to add the same words, "This is a Return Receipt for the mail that you sent to [skip]. Note: This Return Receipt only acknowledges that the message was displayed on the recipient's computer. There is no guarantee that the recipient has read or understood the message contents." in that message in local language. I've searched this site. I've checked settings. I've searched c: drive for words "the mail that you sent to" trying to find RR template. Nothing... Any ideas?

Greetings! MS Defender found a trojan (TrojanDownloader:Win32/Nemucod!ml) in my profiles. A family member let Defender "remove" it, while I would've left it alone and then come here to isolate it or somehow bottle it up.

My questions are this. Was this from an email stored in Thunderbird, or was it from something one of my kids opened up? And second, I'm guessing Defender did damage in removing it and my Tbird is now corrupt. If it is, should I do a back up emails, remove the program and re-install? Could this have been a false positive?

Thanks in advance!

When I double click on an email it is not opening the email in a new tab but instead in a reply window.

Windows 11 Home, 64-Bit vsn 21H2, OS Build : 22000.778 Thunderbird 102.0.1 (64-Bit)

We have 2 users on the PC - one user works OK and the other user has the problem.

Double clicking an email in all folders except the InBox works OK - it opens in a new tab. It is only the InBox that has the problem.

Under settings (Reading & Display) the "Open Messages in a new tab" is set

I've tried changing the mail.openMessageBehaviour settings but it has no effect

In the Account Settings (Copies & Folders) I've tried changing all the locations from "Local Folders" (default) to "Other" and then selecting the relevant folder.

What else should I try?

Many thanks, Dave

v91.7.0 on OS X 10.14.6 Used TB for many many years. Have a Charter IMAP email account set up. All of a sudden a good number of months ago, all my emails in my Inbox have a banner that says "This is a draft message" when just clicking on them in the email list.

Opening any of those mail (which for some reason always opens as Write: mode, whatever that is, not view or reply; not sure what's going on there either) will show a yellow banner at the bottom of the email with the following: "A unique identity matching the From address was not found. The message will be sent using the current From field and settings from identity <IDENTITY> <MY EMAIL>."

Any other folders, like Sent or Saved folders don't show or have this issue. I am not and don't use Unified View. I also have two GMail accounts and neither of them are doing that with their Inboxes.

EDIT: It displays some similarities as the bug here, but not all of them (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1508153). For example I don't get a double window.

Some messages appear garbled/appear as code only: Some appear correctly at first, then at a subsequent reading, they have become garbled. Some messages suddenly (not on the initial reading, but on subsequent readings) have an erroneous Subject or Sender, and I recognize the (often garbled) content as belonging to another Subject or Sender. The problem is spurious: For instance, most e-mails from a particular Sender will read correctly, but every now and again a message appears garbled. When this happens, the From and Subject field will be empty when I open the message. (See attached images) These errors began when my e-mail provider Telenor (@online.no) started to upgrade their e-mail service a few months ago, and so far, they have not been able to pinpoint the cause or correct the problem. But all messages appear correctly on the server, so I suspect TB is not able to fetch and sort messages correctly. As a possible workaround: Is there a way to re-download a particular message to get a "clean" version of that particular message in TB? (I use TB version 102.11.2, Build ID 20230526152851). Thanks for your help :)

Hello, I've been using Thunderbird since it first came out may years ago and have been a satisfied user. Sometime in the past year, after one of the Thunderbird updates, Thunderbird became EXTERMELY slow to open. It takes over a minute. I have looked for solutions here for the past year...no luck (I've read through most all of them here, that have to do with slowness of Thunderbird opening, as well as on Reddit). I've tried basic troubleshooting e.g. clearing Thunderbird cache, increasing cache to huge size. I've seen references to the slowness being related to "multiple calendars". I don't use calendars on Thunnderbird and went as far as to delete/disable the default one that was there. Still no improvement. I know its a Thunderbird specific problem since:

a. I don't have this slowness opening any other program on my Mac (opening it or using it) b. I don't have a problem with performance of Thunderbird once it finally opens c. It all started in 2022 immediately after one of the Thunderbird updates.

I am on: Mac Air M1, Ventura 13.2, 16 GB Ram Thunderbird 102.14.0 (64-bit)

I hate to ditch Thunderbird after using it all these years and being a very early user since it came out, but I am at wits end. Any help is appreciated. Thanks for any help in advance!

Hi,

I've recently tried connecting my Yahoo account to my Thunderbird client (102.12.0 (64-bit) on Windows 10 but it refuses to connect. I add the account and use the recommended settings, I get through entering my email, password, checking I am not a bot, and autheniticating using an app but then it just reverts back to asking me to entering my email again (screen shot 1) and never connects.

I have a VPN but the issue remains when it is turned off. I have also tried logging in to my email in Firefox and this works fine so there's no issue with the credentials at all. The settings are the standard (second screen shot)

Can you advise please as this is my main email address and I'd like it working, as has done for years, in Thunderbird.

Many thanks

[EDIT] Antivirus was the cause. Had to add exceptions for https://mail.yahoo.com and https://login.yahoo.com in my antivirus settings to finally get access
