Search the registry using java like http://lenkite.blogspot.nl/2008/05/access-windows-registry-using-java.html

or find firefox.exe through java code like http://www.mkyong.com/java/search-directories-recursively-for-file-in-java/

I don't think that you can determine the Firefox launch pad in all cases and there are also other Operating Systems to consider and the Java plugin can be disabled or set to click-to-play if you mean Java and not JavaScript. This can't be done via JavaScript that runs on a web page, but possible via an installed extension.
