FIREFOX OPENS RAR FILES INSTEAD OF DOWNLOAD

more options

I'm using Firefox 21. When I try to click in a rar file link, firefox opens the file instead of download. I've tried to change in "Tools->Options-> Aplications" the actions taken by the browser depending of file types, but there is no case for rar files and I cannot add it.

Anyone can help?

Thanks in advance

This can happen if the server isn't configured properly and sends the file as text/plain.

You should be able to verify this in Tools > Page Info > General

  • Press the F10 key or tap the Alt key to bring up the hidden "Menu Bar" temporarily.

In such a case you can't left-click a link, but need to use the right-click context menu and use "Save Link As"

As you say that the browser opens directly the .rar file instead of download .it looks that any of the achiever program(Like win-rar,win-zip) doesn't configure properly in your system .so,firstly try to reinstall any one of software in your system .now goto to browser-> tools->option->application.here under action tab you select "save file" instead of "always ask "(note that if you select "always ask" option then browser prompt with you at downloading time. some images of these steps are shown below:-

I've reinstalled winrar, but this aplication doesn't appear in browser->tools->options->Aplications. Is it possible to add it editing any file?

Any idea?

Did you check how the server sends this file like I wrote above?

Yes the server sends the file as text/plain. The link is in a email, and we copy it to the browser. Doing this i haven't seen the "save link as" option.

In such a case you will have to create a clickable link in a Firefox browser window or create an HTML file with this link.

I use a keyword bookmarklet for occasions like this.

data:text/html,<a href="%s">&lt;%S&gt;</a>

Create a new bookmark and paste the data URI bookmarklet code in its location field.

Is there any way to configure firefox to download rar files instead of opening? Perhaps editing any config file? The same rar file can be downloaded with ie10, seems very strange that it wasn't possible easily using firefox.

"The Applications panel has limited functionality for editing." You can change the action for an existing file type but you cannot add or remove file types. Entries are added automatically when you download files and select actions for them. one more thing you can do that on the web, find a link to a file matching(winrar) the type you want to add. Click on the file link to download it. try this or use one more time fresh installation of firefox.
