open yahoo email kills up/down arrow keys in Yahoo email

After opening an email in yahoo and hitting the Esc key to return to ther Inbox, my up/down arrow keys are dead. I must restart the browser to fix this.I suspect otehr keys are dead as well. Appears to have started with 14.0.1. I am running WINxp. I am seeing the same thing on 2 separate machines. This does not occur in IE8. Thank you

Hi,

Please try a Ctrl + F5 refresh. This helps to bring in the page contents afresh. If the problem persists, you can also consider the Reset Firefox feature via Help (Alt + H) > Troubleshooting Information.

(To revert to the previous profile, close the new profile, start Firefox and choose the *.default profile. While the Profile Manager is open, you can also delete the newly reset profile (the one containing random numbers)).

Thanks for the ideas. I tried CTRL-F5(refresh) and a Reset and still have the same problem.

Not only are the up/down arrow keys dead but the delete key is dead as well.

It seems to be okay. You mean moving through the mail list, hitting Enter to open a mail, Esc. to move out etc. isn't it?? Please note that you may have to wait for the page to fully load. Though the tab icon may stop revolving, sometimes it would start again within a few seconds to indicate that page contents are still being loaded.

I would say this is just an isolated problem if it only occurred on a single machine. But I am seeing it on a Dell desktop(XP) as well as a IBM Thinkpad XP (laptop).

If you have security software (antivirus, firewall etc.) installed, you can try deleting all existing instances of Firefox and related files in all the different configuration areas/modules of the security software. Instead create new allow/trusted rules for Firefox + its related processes. Even otherwise the security software may also ask again when Firefox is started and you can try to allow/trust at that time. Please see this.

Thanks but that pretty much greek to me. Seems strange a firewall would disable only certain keys. It's hard to believe others have not complained about this. Thanks again.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

Sadly, I blew away my old profile, everything FF fresh and the problem remains. BTW, Chrome does not exhibit this defect either. Thank you Cor-el.

That is an indication that is is more likely a problem on your computer.

You can try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that works any better.

Thanks cor-el, I would have thought that as well. But if you read my comments from above, it is failing on two different computers. All indications point to FireFox. :<(

Do those keys only stop working in the browser area or also in other tabs or windows like the download manager or windows opened via Tools > Options?

Did you try to click elsewhere in the user interface or switch to another tab or minimize the current window?

No, the arrow keys continue to work in windows, the problem appears to be only in the browser. At the time it breaks, I can click on "Tools" and the arrow keys function fine. Clicking elsewhere is not a problem. I can click anywhere and it's fine. It's only the keyboard that is temporarily breaking. I do find, that once you click on an email(just highlight it, not to open it) with the mouse, the arrow keys work again. The problem only seems to manifest itself when exiting an open email (Esc) back to the Inbox. That seems to be the key.

Problem remains with Yahoo mail on Firefox browser. I have determined it's some sort of focus problem. When I ESC back from an email to the Inbox, then press the tab key 3 times, the arrow keys work again. It appears after hitting ESC from an email, the keyboard focus is mistakenly on the Firefox Menu Bar (File, Edit, View, etc). The focus should remain on the Yahoo Inbox as it did before.

Has anyone tested this with Yahoo email to verify my findings? I am using the newer Yahoo email and pay a yearly them for no ads.

Well, version FF15.0 installed this morning and I was hopeful but still the same problem. I'm now officially using Chrome as y default browser. Very disappointed in Firefox and their support mechanisms and their response to my detailed/valid bug. Good luck to all.

I have had this problem for a really long time, but it was recently working for me and unfortunately, it's back. I'm not sure if it was a FF upgrade or what.

I do have more information that could help someone debug the problem. It appears to be a focus issue within the browser.

From the inbox, use the arrow keys to select an email. Once the email is opened in its own Ymail tab there are 2 ways to see the problem that I am aware of:

  1. Use the escape key to close the currently open email tab and return to the email list
  2. Use the delete key to delete the currently open email and return to the email list


Once back at the email list, the arrow keys and other Ymail shortcuts no longer work. This appears to be a focus problem within FF.

I have found 3 work-arounds for the problem which may help someone figure out what's going on:

  1. Use the mouse to reselect the email list. This is annoying if you are in keyboard mode.
  2. Hit the TAB key 5 times to get the email list refocused.
  3. Hit the F6 key to cause FF to go to the next frame. This is the easier of the keyboard work-arounds.

After getting the email list back in focus, all of the Ymail shortcuts and arrow keys work again.

Maybe this information will help someone figure out what the problem is.

Hi Fevans, Thank goodness someone else finally validated my problem which still persists and as documented only fails in Firefox. I agree with you about a keyboard focus problem. After hitting ESC in an email and you return to the email list, Firefox is placing the keyboard pointer in the wrong location. Also, I only have to hit forward-tab 3 times to get the keyboard pointer back to the correct position. So, I'm unsure what you have to hit it 5 times. Very strange that others are not hitting this defect and reporting it. Yahoo mail has millions of users There must be thousands suffering from it. Many have probably just bailed from Firefox. Stranger yet is why my original problem report did not warrant an investigation from Firefox developers. I merely got the brush-off as a user problem. I tested software for IBM for 20 years so you'd think I would know a little something. Thanks again.
