Upgraded to Firefox 13 ... it didn't import from previous version ... went to build a new bookmarks toolbar and when I tried to drag a website item to the toolbar (like I used to be able to do easily in previous version) I got a circle with a line through it - which basically said sorry you can't do that. Backgraded to Version 12 and am having the same problem. I have no extensions running. The Bookmark toolbar is checked (to be shown) and there is a blank one up there ... just can't add anything to it. Any suggestions on what I may be missing would be appreciated. I'd hate to give up on Firefox at this late date. Thanks!

Well, I'm embarrassed to admit that I followed all your suggestions with little luck ... but then I started to "pitch and putt" with virtually everything they allowed me to do in both display and customize and up popped the bookmark toolbar that WAS imported when I upgraded - but wasn't showing ... I suspect it was the restore default setting thing that worked at some point. (I'm decidedly NOT a techie as you may have guessed.) But, what worries me is that I really don't know what I did and if I go to another machine and have the same problem I'll be starting over (but with the knowledge that I CAN fix it if I'm persistent). Thanks for everyone's suggestions! I'm back with Firefox again.

What exactly are you dragging: is it the site's "favicon" (site identity button) to the left of the site's address, or something from the page itself, such as a link? Could you give an example of something that won't drag?

Does it work if you press and hold down the Ctrl key while dragging?

Yes ... the site identity button. Just won't let me drag it to the bookmark toolbar. (Interestingly ... I installed Firefox 13 on another machine this afternoon and it allows me to build the bookmark toolbar just fine. That one is a mystery now.)

Thanks for the response.

Nope, Control Key doesn't help. (Noted in a different reply ... installed 13 on a different machine this afternoon and I can build the bookmark toolbar on that one. Another mystery.)

Thanks for the response.

Make sure that toolbars like the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible: "View > Toolbars"

  • Open the Customize window to set which toolbars to display
    • View > Toolbars > Customize
    • Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout
  • Check that the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • If the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the toolbar palette in the customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • If missing items are in the toolbar palette then drag them back from the Customize window on the toolbar
  • If you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the toolbar palette then click the "Restore Default Set" button to restore the default toolbar set up
