when I open a new tab, I just get a new tab which is a blank page....help me please

when I want to open a new tab, click on the +and I get a blank page, no search engine at all, is so frustrating, I have removed and downloaded 3x. Am ready to give up. The only way I can have more than one window is to open Firefox multiple times. Help
