How is an add-on removed and not just disabled?

There are several add-ons I would like to remove but there is only a disable button. How can I totally remove all traces of one of these add-ons? and example of this is obsolete Java Console add-ons. I use windows XP SP3 with all updates. I now have Firefox 6.
