"empty" right & left margins on websites on monitor when laptop is in docking station

Having a hard time reading small fonts on websites. Have already changed min font size to 14 -> no change. I see empty margins on websites when laptop is in docking station and am viewing internet on monitor. Changed font size in Ctrl Panel to larger. No change on internet sites. I need to make a universal change not just the ctrl + which doesn't make the page I see any larger. How can I "stretch" the websites so they fit in monitor? Am using boring Acer AL1717; nothing too wide. Have Windows 7. Sadly did NOT have this trouble with IE but do not want to go back to IE
