On opening Firefox or accessing a link it does not disply the url but shows 'Go to a website'
Often the URL of a website is not shown but 'Go to a website' is displayed in the address bar - even when opening my home page. This makes it difficult if I need to reload the current page which may have a very long address. This problem has only recently started to occur.
Chosen solution
Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
- Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
- Use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions.
- Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
In Firefox 4+ you can use one of these to start in Safe mode:
- Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
- Hold down the Shift key while double clicking the Firefox desktop shortcut (Windows)

Many thanks cor-el for your response, it sulved my problem. On disabling the the plug-in 'Gom player + ask' toolbar all was restored to normal. I'm very grateful. John855
After some trial and error slowly re-enabling add-ons, the bad add-on causing this problem was DivX Web Player. If you using a DivX add-on I would recommended disabling it as a start. DivX apparently have not done much testing :(
