In FF4, the remember password box pops up from the left of the address bar. However, when I press 'remember password' the button seems to be locked and nothing happens. I've checked the password area in the control panel and it's empty. I've checked the files - key3.db and signons.sqlite - they seem to have data in them. I've disabled all plugins and addons, but still doens't help.

Can you please advise how to resolve this? Thanks

Chosen solution

It is possible that there is a problem with the files key3.db and signons.sqlite that store the encrypted names and passwords in Firefox.
Rename the files key3.db and signons.sqlite in the Firefox profile folder.
You can add .old to the file names (key3.db.old and signons.sqlite.old) or move them to another folder to make it possible to undo the action.
You need to set a new Master Password after renaming or deleting key3.db and all currently saved passwords are lost.
If that has worked then you can remove the renamed files that are no longer needed.

Check this article out. Might be useful !

Usernames and passwords are not saved

Yes, I checked that article, but the problem seems deeper than this.

Do you see passwords in the Password Manager?

  • Tools > Options > Security: Passwords: "Saved Passwords" > "Show Passwords"

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.

  • Use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions.
  • Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

In Firefox 4 you can use one of these to start in Safe mode:

  • Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Hold down the Shift key while double clicking the Firefox desktop shortcut (Windows)

Thanks for your reply. I followed the advice and disabled everything in safe mode, but the 'rememberpassword' button still refuses to respond.

I assume this problem is local to me and not a bug in FF? Any further advice will be warmly welcome!
