Bookmarks don't work at all. Old bookmarks lost, can't save new ones or restore from automatic or manual backup

Tonight when I went to bring up Firefox, it automatically updated the software. When the browser came up, my bookmarks were all gone. I tried restoring from backup (I get the error message "Unable to process the backup file.", importing from a manually exported HTML file (nothing happens), and saving new bookmarks (when I click Bookmarks again, the newly saved bookmark isn't there). I tried all the trouble-shooting advice; I have only one profile. I tried doing a system restore back to three days ago when Firefox worked. I tried uninstalling Firefox and reinstalling. Nothing works. Please help me ASAP, as I cannot function without my bookmarks!!! Also, please LET ME KNOW at twslisa@yahoo.com when this question is answered, as I can't find answers to previous questions on your cluttered forum!!!
