Bookmark folders which still appear on the Library have disappeared from the bookmark Choose menu.

Most of my bookmark folders have disappeared from the "choose" option for where to store a new bookmark while you're creating it, although the folders all still appear in the "Organize Bookmarks" Library. I didn't change any settings, and I'm not aware of anything I could have changed inadvertently. It may have happened when Firefox had one of its crashes, which it's been having fairly frequently lately, but I don't remember for sure. I don't know, but I think the crashes might have something to do with running low on memory. Restarting the computer didn't fix the problem.

Update on this problem: I noticed, in the bookmarks Library, that the program seemed to have duplicated part of my bookmarks -- there was an extra Bookmarks Menu item, and within it was a duplicate of one folder and part of another, with all remaining folders missing. Whenever I created a new bookmark and tried to direct where it should go while creating it, it was taking me to this incomplete duplicate Bookmarks Menu, rather than to the original one which still has all the folders.

I hoped that if I deleted the duplicates, it would go back to directing me to the original folder structure the next time I tried to create a bookmark. So, I tried this. But, instead, it now shows no folders at all from which to choose where to direct the new bookmark. I can still create new bookmarks by letting them go into the default place, then going into the Library and moving them to where I actually want them. But this is roundabout and takes extra time. How do I get it to offer all folders again when creating a bookmark, so I can direct it to the correct folder at the time I create it?

This can be a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

The bookmarks problem resolved itself (after deleting the duplicates and then restarting the computer a couple of times) -- but now I have a NEW PROBLEM which may be related: My "back" button is no longer working in only 2 specific situations on 1 specific website. It appears to be working in all other situations, even on that website. I asked the manager of the website, and he said he hasn't changed anything on the website.

I tried renaming the "places.sqlite" and "places.sqlite-journal" files and letting Firefox rebuild them, per the instructions in the link in the above post. This did not resolve the problem. I tried restarting the computer after rebuilding these files. This didn't work, either.

What else can I do?

Would upgrading to the newer version of Firefox fix this problem? Or might that make it more difficult to fix, if the problem is carried over from the version in which it started to another version?

Is anyone able to offer me any insight about this? I would really like to get full "back" button function working -- and I really need to know whether installing the Firefox upgrade currently being offered would make the problem better or worse. I'm holding off on installing the upgrade until I receive an answer to this, because I don't know whether changing the program before the problem is resolved might make it harder to resolve it.

Are you still using that old Firefox 3.0.19 version or did you update in the meantime to a more recent Firefox 3.5.x or 3.6.x or 4.0 version?

I'm still using 3.0.19. I didn't want to add a program change to the mix, just in case that might muddy the waters for determining what caused this current problem and how to fix it.
