how do i clean fast a very large bookmakrs menue

I have "inherited" a PC with Firefox 3.6 that has a bookmark menu of over 6000 items. Manual deletion seems to be very slow and may require many hours.

Is there a fast way to erase all items in BOOKMARKS and then import my own

Start Firefox in Firefox safe mode, in the dialog box that appears select "Delete all bookmarks except for backups", then click "Make Changes and Restart". This will leave you with the handful of default bookmarks that you get with a new installation.

You can then import your own bookmarks.
