Won't connect: "The proxy server is refusing connections." Why? How do I fix it?
I am not a computer person--the machine is a super typewrrriter and research aid; like an auto, it should just run when you buy it. But. I got a virus; tried my amatuer best to correct or fix things. The computer runs now, but will only access Internet Explorer, and Firefox is my browser of choice. Now when I click on Firefox the opening screen starts, then carries the message: "The Proxy Server is refusing connections."

In Firefox 3.6.4 and later the default connection settings have been changed to "Use the system proxy settings".
See "Firefox connection settings" in Server Not Found - Troubleshoot connection problems
You can find the connection settings in Tools > Options > Advanced : Network : Connection
If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet then select No Proxy
I've turned the no proxy on and that works fine for the browser. However, all other programs, mainly AIM and Yahoo! messengers have stopped working all together along with a few others like steam and even the anti-viruses that detected a virus. This problem didn't occur when I updated firefox but after I deleted a trojan that was driving Windows Defender nuts. Trojan.Win32.Agent.cycb
not sure if the two are related but turning the no proxy setting on doesn't help any other programs. anyway to fix this or do you have reboot all programs to no proxy or whatever?
