I lost my buttons which bookmarked my favorite websites. Where did they go?

I had a bar beneath the domain box and above my open window tabs on my work Firefox. It had ten, or so, buttons which directed me right to the websites I used most without having to type in the domain or go through a search engine. I came in to work two days ago to find it inexplicably gone. How do I get it back, and how do I prevent it from running off again?

I found it. View --> Toolbars --> Bookmarks Toolbar. However, I'm still confused as to why it dissappeared to begin with.

You posted with a very old Firefox 3.0.6 version (latest 3.0.x was 3.0.19) that no longer receives security updates..
You should update to the latest Firefox 3.5.x or 3.6.x version.

Your above posted system details show outdated plugin(s) with known security and stability risks that you should update.

  1. Shockwave Flash 10.0 r45
  2. Java Plug-in 1.5.0_06 for Netscape Navigator (DLL Helper)
