There is no reason to think that you can't use both Firefox and Internet explorer on the same computer. Both applications will by default ask when they are opened whether you want to make them the default program if they are not at the time. You'll want to turn that off in one of the two.

Having both programs installed on your computer though, is no different than having both Microsoft Word and WordPad, or MSPaint and Gimp. So do not worry about having both Firefox and Internet Explorer both installed. Though it should also be noted that trying to remove Internet Explorer from a computer running Windows 95 or later is inadvisable and incredibly difficult anyway.

Make sure that you do not set Firefox to be the default browser if it launches the first time.

Tools > Options > Advanced > General : System Defaults

"Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser on startup"
