When I resize the window, wherever I click next it resizes to and won't stop for a random length of time.

I'm using Firefox 3.6.7 with Mac OS X 10.4.11. When I start up Firefox, it automatically resizes to fill the screen, and I don't want it to. There are folders I want to be able to access quickly, located just above the dock. So I resize the window myself. However, the next time I click on ANYTHING, it resizes the window to that point. For instance, if I click on one of my bookmarks from the toolbar, the window is suddenly about a centimeter thick. It's like it doesn't know that I've let go of the bottom of the window. This problem is INFURIATING. Especially since there is no clear way to stop it; it just seems to stop by itself after a short but random length of time. Sometimes it'll incorrectly resize just once, sometimes five or six times before I can get it to stop. Clicking the desktop, then clicking back on Firefox does not solve the problem.
