My pop up blocker is not working properly, how can I fix this?

I have windows XP O/S I've had to reinstall firefox a number of times this week, because i couldn't open it from my desk top. Now I have it installed, almost every time I open a web page an unwanted pages starts running opens and than freezes everything else

This happened

Every time Firefox opened
