mail in Inbox gets overwritten by content of another email

Hello, I've been using Thunderbird since pretty much ever for my work place email account. Since a couple of years (indeed since my job position changed resulting in significant increase of email frequency; currently I have few thousand emails in the Inbox, and much more in separate folders) I'm observing an unfortunate and I should say also a very serious problems with it.

From time to time some mail in the Inbox gets overwritten by the content of another email (also in the Inbox), leaving the subject, recepient, sender etc. intact. So far I was not able to reproduce the circumstances under which this happens. It is happening currently on my Lenovo laptop, 11th Gen i7, 16GB of memory, running Windows 11 Pro, and has happened before on a Mac AirBook machine (bought two years ago, and this was actually the reason to change the mailer app on Mac, and one of the reasons I went back to Windows machine).

I don't think I need to mention how serious this problem may be (well, I guess it depends on the importance of the email that gets overwritten) and I really hope you may be able to suggest a cure.

First of all, make sure to create a full backup of your Thunderbird profile before any attempts to fix the problem. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data#w_backing-up-a-profile

Accumulating messages in Inbox will make it more susceptible to mail file corruption, which is often caused by anti-virus software. These are some generic suggestions to avoid problems with anti-virus software.

Create an exception in your anti-virus software for the Thunderbird profile folder, so that the anti-virus real-time scanner will not scan it. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data#w_how-to-find-your-profile

Don't let your anti-virus software scan incoming and outgoing messages.

Don't let your anti-virus software scan attachments.

Don't let your anti-virus software intercept your secure connection to the server.

Remove any add-ons your anti-virus software may have installed in Thunderbird.

And last but not least, backup your Thunderbird profile on a regular basis.


To fix the actual problem, try to rebuild the index file of Inbox. Right-click Inbox in the folder pane - Properties - Repair Folder
