When I check for FireFox updates, the message states "Firefox is up to date" or similar. However, the currently installed browser version is 68.11.0esr. I've seen higher version numbers so, I don't think this is correct. I've read many help items, FAQ's, etc, including those by Firefox, and yet can not determine the process to remove the current browser version and install a later version.

Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE 3) LMDE 3 Cindy Cinnamon Version 4.2.4 Linux Kernel 4.9.0-13-amd64

Thanks gb

Hello goorsbuge,

Have you installed Firefox from your application center in the operating system? In that case the reason might be that LMDE 3 is no longer supported. Consider an upgrade to LMDE 4 or LMDE 5 (I linked the instructions), and after that use the application center to update Firefox. The current versions are 112 or since you are using LMDE probably ESR 102.10.

Please report back if this helps you.

Only the official builds of Firefox for Linux from say https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ can get internal Firefox updates from Mozilla. You just have to make sure the Firefox folder as read/write permissions for the user to do updates.

If you are using a package build of Firefox then then updates will be through package manager as long as you have sources that are still providing updates.

Apologize for not responding to James and qxyz123. For me, this forum is very difficult to understand. I don't know how I reached this point. I know I won't be able to remember.

I think the solutions presented may work. However, there is too much for me to understand. The terminology is overwhelming:

James ... Only the official builds of Firefox for Linux from say https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ can get internal Firefox updates .......... "official builds" What are official builds? How does one differentiate between official and not official? .......... "internal Firefox updates" What does this mean? If you are using a package build of Firefox .......... a "package build?" .......... is it necessary to know all of this to upgrade?

qxyz123 ... Have you installed Firefox from your application center ... ..........What is "application center?"

My background in computers began in 1969 or 1970. I first learned FORTRAN. Then Pascal, C, Basic and others. I have written both small and large programs. Currently, I write Bash, Awk and a little C. While I understand this part of computing, I find I have not kept up with the new jargon.

In LMDE, with a lot of internet searching, books, etc I have managed to change some of the graphical user interface settings including scroll bar sizing and buttons.

When I do get some time, I will upgrade to LMDE 5, or perhaps 6. In the meantime, I'd like to continue using LMDE 3 and be able to understand how to upgrade, or update, to the latest version of Firefox that will run in LMDE 3.

Thanks to anyone who can assist an old timer with new terminology.

Verify that you meet the System Requirements (GTK+ and GLib) for the current Firefox release.
