On the Cardbook tab, click the 3-bar menu icon (upper left corner), Address Book, New Address Book, Remote, Google, enter your gmail address, then continue by entering the account password for OAuth2 authentication.

You could also add Google Contacts with the built-in CardDAV sync: in Address Book, New Address Book, Add CardDAV Address Book, enter your gmail address in the Username box, omit the Location (Contacts are autodetected), continue by entering the account password in the OAuth2 window.

To open Cardbook tab: press Alt if the Menu Bar is hidden, then Tools/Cardbook. Or, Ctrl+Shift+B. Or, add Cardbook button to the Mail Toolbar.
