My emails have a huge display of algorithms in a window? at the top of the page-- that seems to be included in any forwarding I do----------how do I close that?

Also--- i have lost a row of options at the top of my composing emails "write" It used to show a button to "forward" etc. How do I get that back?

Question--why do I have problems created when I allow Thunderbird's "updates" ? it really is getting more frequent-- and frustrating

I will take a wild guess that you need to set the view menu header entry to normal. But it really is just a guess as I fail to understand what it is you are saying being the lots of entries on forwards.
