When I try to send a Thunderbird I get a long error message, the short of it is "authentication required but not provided." I've explored the numerous solutions in this help area but I'm pretty sure I've done more damage than good. I can receive emails just fine. Thunderbird is very important to me, I love the architecture. I've tried the various solutions to the point I can't remember what I've done (horrible change management on my part). I'm sure something is wrong in the various settings and preferences but I'm so confused now I don't know what to do next. My thinking is I need to remove the preferences and account settings and start over. I even uninstalled the reinstalled, alas, it saves all those settings which are obviously wrong. I have my email address books backed up but I have exactly 100 saved email folders and I REALLY don't want to lose them.

Another nagging issue is I have to enter my password to open emails every new time I start Thunderbird. Firefox isn't saving passwords but I really don't care about that.
So I'm at the begging point, how do I resolve this issue - please. Thanks much for the product and any support you can provide.

Chosen solution

re :authentication required but not provided.

It means when you send you are not providing the required authentication. Check the outgoing server smtp settings.

  • Right click on mail account name in Folder Pane and select 'Settings'

This opens 'Account Settings'

  • Bottom right locate where it says which 'Outgoing Server SMTP' the account is using
  • click on 'Edit SMTP_Server..' button

Check the server settings and edit as required.

  • 'Authentication Method' = 'Normal Password'
  • 'User Name' = full email address
  • click on OK

Restart Thunderbird to ensure it is using those updated settings.

what is the complete error message? Not the gist of it please all of it.

You appear to be using windows 10, so try using the snip tool to grab the dialog as an image you can upload with your reply on the forum.

An error occurred while sending email. The mail server responded: sorry, authentication required but not provided. Please check message recipient marjit@yhti.net and try again.

Hand typed, I was able to 'snip' but couldn't figure out how to transfer data to this message.

I've had similar problems a couple of times over the last 15 or so years but it was usually resolved by rebooting or closing and reopening Thunderbird. Totally stumped and exasperated this time. Thanks for stepping up.

Should have said there is no error number, sorry.
