Chosen solution

This can be done with css:

#threadTree treecol, #threadTree .treecol-image {
background-color: orange !important;
border-inline-start: 1px solid grey !important;
padding-top: 2px !important;
padding-bottom: 2px !important;
color: black !important;
font-weight: bold !important;
-moz-appearance: none !important;}

Help/More Troubleshooting, Profile Folder, Open Folder, close TB, create a new folder named chrome, create a new document in chrome with a text editor, name it userChrome.css, Save as type: All files *.*, copy in the above code, change the colors as desired. Double-click toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets to true in Preferences/General/Config. editor, restart TB. See attached picture.

It's possible to have different colors for each button: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1293251

Yes, it can be done, but the full capability is beyond simple support. I suggest you do web searches for thunderbird userchrome.css for more help. Here is answer to similar question asked previously: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/que.../1094825
