updating thunderbird

My Thunderbird will not update itself. I had the update off for years - I hate opening up the program and everything is suddenly different - and just turned it back on recently. I am on version 38.5.0. I am running windows 7.

Thunderbird has been having scripts "not responding", so I figured something got too old, or caught a virus or something. When the auto-update happens it comes back with something like "thunderbird can't tell if there is an update". And when I open "about Thunderbird", it does not have the "updating Thunderbird" timer going.

Do I need to down load a new Thunderbird?
