In the last two weeks, I began getting notifications of news events. I blocked all Notifications in Settings, but they keep coming. They cover a lot of real estate on the right side of my browser (Ffx 91.0.2 on Win 10).

The ones illustrated are all labeled gmail, but many others are from other sources. I want to stop all the intrusions.

I am guessing you have enabled push notifications from the business insider web site.

Perhaps these instructions will help https://www.businessinsider.com.au/business-insider-notifications-welcome-note-2019-5

I don't understand however what this has to do with email.

Thanks for the prompt reply, Matt. I used the link you offered. I won't bore you with the further investigation I had to do to find how to unsubscribe on Firefox (it required some digging), but I did find a possible cause of the problem. I can't yet say it's solved, but will let you know if it isn't, or come back to close the book if it is.

Again, thanks for your service. I support Mozilla, and people like you are the reason.

The problem is not solved, Matt. Insider was the source of all the notifications I sent yesterday, but they come from many other sources too. I have attached just three--all different--but today is a slow day for notifications, being Sunday.

I'll appreciate further suggestions.

As Matt said, this is not Thunderbird. These are push alerts/notifications, not email messages. You would need to find out how to unsubscribe from each source, like Associated Press, Yahoo News etc, the same as you did from Insider. You did say you had turned off Windows 10 Breaking News alerts, right? Anyway, not an issue with Thunderbird.

Thanks, AgnesRM.

  • I have not subscribed to ANY of the offending notifiers. The notifications just started appearing recently.
  • I searched for Notifications in Firefox Settings. The search took me to Permissions. I removed all websites from Notification Permissions.
  • I misspoke in my original post. I did not "block" all Notifications, rather, I removed all websites from the Permissions for Notifications. just now I went back and blocked new requests asking to allow notifications. let's see if that makes a difference.
  • I just realized that a lot of the notifications are from my Thunderbird Inbox, including private emails, like from my wife. Maybe this IS a Thunderbird issue. I'll inquire in that community.
  • I also just turned off notifications from email in my Windows System settings.

Anyway, my problem is not yet solved, but it may not be Mozilla-based. What do you think?

Thanks, Matt. I don't often visit the forums and thought I was on Firefox. I'll look up that one now.

You may also have an alert service turned on in Yahoo or Gmail or whichever email service you use, that's adding the breaking news to the email alerts. There are many apps that do this. Good hunting!
