Is there some way to lock the firefox settings to prevent third party app changing things such as search engines and home pages etc?

Even a third party addon that will prevent changes being made to firefox settings without an authorised password or such. I am sick of things sneakily changing my search engine or home page to Bing or Google, I want to lock the settings to ensure they can't be changed.

You can use policies to set and lock the Home page, but you can't do this for the search engine (that is only possible on ESR).

Yeah, that is a list of commands to use somehow. It means absolutely nothing to me.

It's like giving a person a list of car parts and what they do but no instructions on how to put them together.

Some anti-virus type programs can do this. I don't have a list of them.

Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles {web link} I use a Legacy add-on that makes backups of my user profile, Just In Case. Unfortunately, it is not compatible with the current Firefox.

Every now and then, open the profile folder and create a copy of the current profile as is to another location on your hard drive. This way you will have a backup.

If you do this each day, you will not lose much data. This should be done with Firefox Closed.

Note: In case you need to restore from these backups, you may need to overwrite old or corrupted files.
