Setting up a new email account

more options

I have been trying to add another gmail account to Thunderbird. I have done this a number of times successfully but I cannot get this one right. I know I have the correct username (email address) and correct psassword. I have enabled POP for all messages and set up pop and smtp to be exactly like other gmail addresses I have.

Thunderbird: latest version 78 - up-to-date.

When I try to send or receive mail via Thunderbird - I keep getting an error window stating that my username and password are not recognised. Why? What have I missed? I double and triple checked everything. It is possible to see emails, send and receive on a browser by logging on to google mail but thunderbird refuses to accept the new account. I sent an email from another address to the new one and I see it in Google mail. If I send from the browser to my established / main email address I receive the test mail.

How can I get around the issue and solve it? The problem seems to lie with Thunderbird.

Thanks in anticipation.

Chosen solution

I solved the issue by turning on "less secure application" on google. That last link reminded me what needed to be done.

Many thanks Regards

May I add that I also delete the account from thunderbird and tried to set it up again, twice, to no avail.

There shouldn't be any problems adding gmail accounts to TB, as the settings are entered automatically - except if there are interfering apps such as antivirus or you're connecting through a VPN. Do any of these apply in your setup? Try running Windows in safe mode with networking.

I am not connect through VPN and I am using Avast as I have for several years. Even by temporarily disabling this, the automated process does help in setting the account to work. The username and password keep on getting rejected. I reviewed all settings and these conform with all the other accounts I have.

Check that cookies are accepted in TB Options/Privacy & Security, which is necessary for gmail OAuth2 authentication. Avast is a perennial problem, so I suggest you remove it and use Windows Defender.

I do not use OAuth2 - all my accounts are set for Normal Password. What I find strange is, why do other accounts work and this one doesn't? Has something changed with gmail, perhaps?

more options

Gmail has encouraged OAuth2 for some time, and eventually, if not now, it will probably become mandatory. Change the authentication on the incoming and outgoing to OAuth2, remove passwords from Saved Passwords in Options, accept cookies, restart TB, enter the account password in the OAuth window when prompted. OAuth2 also avoids conflicts with 'access by less-secure apps' in Google security and 2-step verification on the account.

Allowing access by less-secure apps will work with normal password authentication until Google disables the access - without notification.

I'll try to keep that in mind. I will have to change settings to all my email addresses....
