This issue has been around for months, if not years. See e.g.:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1289060

This happens even in Safe Mode with all add-ons disabled.

Previously suggested fixes such as the following don't work anymore: - specifying a default account in Account Settings; - going to Server Settings > Message Storage > Advanced and checking "Include this server when getting new mail"; - playing around with the parameters of the Manually Sort Folders add-on.

Ideas, anyone?

Chosen solution

It turns out accidentally launching two Thunderbird instances simultaneously eliminated the problem, like here:

Come on, Mozilla: this isn't the proper way to fix bugs.

Thunderbird is not a Mozilla project, they withdrew in 2012. So no point calling on them to do anything.

Sure the issue has been around a long time... that is because it has many causes and not all of them have anything to do with Thunderbird at all. But the manually sort folders is known to mess with the default account setting so I would be checking without it before I did anything else.

I will mark your question solved as you have fixed the problem.
