I was told by Geek Squad (that originally told me to use Mozilla Thunderbird) that Thunderbird was no longer being supported and I should change. I had called them because it has started taking 30 to 45 seconds for an email to be sent after hitting send. I also get an authocation failed message and have to re enter my password. It looks like I have the 78 version.

Was Geek Squad wrong? How can this be fixed?

Was Geek Squad wrong?

Yes, Thunderbird is actively being developed, and it does receive security updates on a regular basis.

I also get an authocation failed message and have to re enter my password.

Please post your Troubleshooting Information. At the top right of the Thunderbird window, click the menu button , then select Help > Troubleshooting Information. Press the "Copy text to clipboard button" and paste the information into your reply.

Also, what is your anti-virus software?

Perhaps read what you were told and do it. Without information from your volunteers are only able to guess.
