Hi,

I'm a long-time TB user, currently Portable Apps vsn. 78.3.1 (32 bit). My desktop PC (Win 10) suddenly failed to connect to my POP account. I don't think it's a server problem as I have changed no settings and my other devices (Android, iPad Air 2) still connect fine. The message I receive is: Thunderbird: Connection to server xxx was reset. I reinstalled TB Portable, keeping the same profile, etc., but I didn't really expect it to fix things and it didn't. I've tried safe mode but no joy, so I doesn't look like an addon problem.

Would anybody have any useful suggestions please, as I'm stumped :(

Thanks!

OK, additional info - I've just downloaded and installed TB Desktop (Win 10), copied my (large!) profile folder from my PortableApps version, and I have the same problem.

I'm not sure what that tells me - something corrupt in my profile folder? A problem with my wifi connection to the router, causing the connection to be continually reset?

I would be really grateful for any help/useful suggestions with this.

Thanks!

Hello there Bob191

We have read your message. We try to help you.

You can solve this by even doing four things. It is probably your Dns Server. First empty your Dns Cache from the server. If you have extra connections to disable them. And also change the default Dns Server of your computer machine. And fifth indeed reset your router.

It is advisable to use Open DNS for this, yes.

Thanks for the help given with this problem. Just to update you, and for anyone with the same problem, after clearing DNS cache, restarting the router, etc., I believe it was actually an intermittent problem with the wi-fi dongle on my desktop PC causing Thunderbird to keep losing touch with the mail servers. Replacing the dongle seems to have done the trick - although I have just posted a question about an entirely different problem! It's never simple, is it? :)

My email host is Superb Internet, powered by Squirrelmail. I've had this problem on and off for over a year but now it appears to be permanent. I have a poor internet connection where I am. Often I found that if I connect very early, 04h00 or so it would work. At times when the signal strength was poor it always gave trouble. The past few months I always get the message and can't get into my mail via Thunderbird at all. I used Internet Explorer for a while. There I get a message: "Connection not protected". I click on: "I understand the risks and wish to continue". Then it proceeds smoothly. I then changed to my Firefox browser. That opens directly without any problem. My internet connection is poor and here data is extremely expensive so I only log on two or three times a day for short periods. I need to be able to store my messages on my computer where I can readily access them which is where Thunderbird really helped me.
