A few days ago the top part of the Thunderbird app disappeared and was replaced by a white box. I tried to see if I could find a fix by going into settings menu (via the email account) but now I'm stuck in this menu as none of the "back" type buttons are displayed up top. The white box is also still there. If I try to click in the white area my mouse will instead select items from the desktop which are underneath the white box

Restart Thunderbird in 'Safe Mode' to see if you get the same issue. This link has info on how to start in safe mode after exiting Thunderbird. You can force an exit via 'Task Manager'. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/safe-mode-thunderbird
