Where can I find my old profile now that I've replaced my version of Ubuntu with another and then updated the old Firefox that was on the bootable disc?

Will my old Firefox profile be in the home folder of my current (running) version of Ubuntu? If so, how can I identify it?

The System Details list shows a Firefox 49.0 version from the Ubuntu repositories.

Did your Ubuntu version come with this Firefox version ?

What Firefox version did you used previously? If that is a more recent Firefox version then you should be cautious to use the profile with this old version. You can check the application.ini file in the profile folder to see what Firefox version last used the profile.

Firefox would normally find the profile folder automatically via the profiles.ini file.

You can possibly use the Profile Manager to create a new profile and transfer data from another profile or backup.

Note that Firefox uses two locations for the Firefox profile folder. Location used for the main profile that keeps your personal data (Root Directory on about:preferences).

  • ~/.mozilla/firefox/

Location used for the disk cache and other temporary files (Local Directory on about:preferences).

  • ~/.cache/mozilla/firefox/

Thank you for writing.

May we take this one step at a time please? - because I'm already confused by the jargon.

The newly installed Ubuntu OS came with Firefox 49. I was prompted to update Fierefox, and so I triedtoupdate it to 68. Apparently, the attempted update wasn't successful.

I'm sure that the last time I looked at which version of Firefox I was using in my old version of Ubuntu (which was months ago), the version number was in the 50s or 60s. Don't worry, I wouldn't use the old profile with this version.

Now, what is the next step for finding the old profile, please?

And another question: If I replace the current version of Ubuntu with another (which is what I plan to do as soon as I can, because this new version turns out to be an unsuppored "End of Life" version of Ubuntu), then will my old Firefox profile still be preserved and accessible for re-use when I finally get a version of Ubuntu working properly in my computer?
