Pdf and Excel docs are not opening automatically in their respective programs as set in options. How to fix?

These would be downloaded documents. When clicked on in the downloads drop down list, the Firefox dialog box asking what program to use to open the file always appears, even though I have previously selected Adobe Acrobat or Excel and "Do this automatically from now on." I am using Firefox Quantum 68.0.1 64 bit.
