In order to make a global search work I have to start the search at the inbox, even though I know that the searched mail is deeper down in the folder tree. Rebuiding the profile did not help. This is actually not a new problem - rather the contrary.

If you're targetting search to a single folder, may I suggest using Quick Filter (Ctrl-Shift-K).
Using the Quick Filter directly on the subfolder I am working with does not do it, unfortunately. It does not find the mails I am interested in.
I don't quite understand. Can you describe your search problem differently?
