I'm on a Windows 7 machine. Update happened 11/14/18 for me. When I open it I get asked a question about the pasword to an an old gmail I don't use anymore. In the past I just Xd out of that. Now when I do, CRASH! Help!

Please post your crash IDs see https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/mozilla-crash-reporter-tb#w_viewing-crash-reports

Odds are you have a custom sound configured to play when you get new mail - it is a known issue being worked on. Change to the default sound and you will be OK.

I tried this... '''Viewing crash reports Skip to Viewing reports outside of Thunderbird if you can't start Thunderbird.''' But it isn't showing any reports for yesterday and none submitted either. As far as sounds I haven't configured anything special. And wouldn't I need to get into Thunderbird to change that anyway? Under SOUND on the computer, I just have "Windows Notify" for new e-mail.

So does the crash reporter say it is submitting the crash to Mozilla or Microsoft?

No it doesn't, just what I attached...

So that is windows crashing.... So no reports or crash ids.

Have you tried reinstalling from getthunderbird.com?

more options

I haven't tried reinstalling. It has only been happening since this last Thunderbird update the other day. Has worked like a charm on this same computer for years. Not enthused about re-configuring all those e-mails if I don't have to.

reinstalling just updates the program files. and updates if needed a couple of files in your profile. it is not a fresh start.

Thanks Matt, just tried it and same issue.

try holding the left shift key while you try and start Thunderbird.

By now you should be on newer version 60.4.0.

Does it also fail if Windows has been started in safe mode? see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17419/windows-7-advanced-startup-options-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7
