I received a notice from Google re security and it appeared to be plain text (that is my default viewing mode). I suspected malware and went to view the raw source. Imagine my surprise when there was no plain text in the raw source, only HTML. Thunderbird was displaying the HTML as if it were plain text, eliminating any chance of my seeing a classic misdirect. Viewing as simple HTML and default HTML gave me two different views. So, I had 3 different view, apparently none of which was actually plain text.

Either this is a pretty significant security but or I am missing something.

Thunderbird has always generated a plain text view if required. to display text and there is none. Most people would object if Thunderbird simply displayed a message that the email had no plain text version and displayed nothing else.

The URL you are being sent to is displayed in the notification bar at the bottom of the Thunderbird window. If you choose not to look at it then you will be "classically misdirected" perhaps, but I do not see hyperlinks being anything but their plain text versions any more than the HTML is reduced to text only.

Thanks. I recently updated from an older version of Thunderbird and the new behavior was not expected. Admittedly, the version I was using until last week was fairly old. I was used to using "view simple HTML" when an email had no plain text version included and thus appeared blank. I think I prefer the old behavior but if there is no option to revert back to that then I guess I'll just have to accept it.

Are you 100% sure that all links are fully displayed with no hidden redirections? If so then the "new" behavior isn't a security risk and while I may not prefer it, it isn't unreasonable or unacceptable.
