Emails are not showing up in my inbox but I can still see them in search (but not then open them from the search list)

I am guilty of hoarding emails in the inbox. Having learned what I have today I will move them to subfolders in future and store them better, and delete stuff I don't need. Lesson learned. Please don't be patronising about this.

I use Thunderbird 52.9.1. 32 bit to access my plusnet emails with IMAP. It has worked fine for months since I started using the software but this afternoon I looked at them and the only emails I can see in my inbox are four that have come to my inbox this morning/afternoon.

If I search within Thunderbird for emails then they show up in the search results but don't then open if I click on them - I am instead greeted with nothing.

Thunderbird has recently been asking me something about compacting emails which it never did before. I've always said no but I wonder if that had something to do with it.

I have researched this to try and find out what the issue is - pressing 'repair folder' has had no effect and I'm hesitant to try anything else for fear of permanently damaging the emails - which I figure must still be there somewhere given that they appear in the search. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Presumably what you see in the search result is what has been indexed, assuming you were talking about Global Search. You'd need to rebuild the index to get rid of orphan search results. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/rebuilding-global-database

Wrt your messages, they are most likely lost. You'd need to restore them from a recent backup done prior to the corruption.

Corruption is often caused by anti-virus software messing with Thunderbird mail files. It is therefore recommended to create an exception for the Thunderbird profile folder, so that the real-time scanner won't attempt to scan the profile with your mail.

For more information on the profile location see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Thunderbird

Also see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Keep_it_working_-_Thunderbird

And make sure to backup your Thunderbird profile on a regular basis. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data#w_backing-up-a-profile

I have this problem. Tried rebuilding the index but deleting the indicated file didn't seem to do anything. As in no rebuild notice, started up right away, etc....didn't seem to re-index anything. Is there anything else I can try please?
