save/open files not working properly

since the latest 61.0.1 update trying to save or open a file causes the explorer window to turn white and hang, during which time the whole screen flashes and the computer is entirely unresponsive. this behavior persists on all browsers, ff, ie, and chrome. if i wait long enough and keep clicking the dialog box....it eventually clears up and is usable, which can take anywhere from just a couple seconds to over a minute. if i dont repeatedly click on the window...it wont resolve....it will just sit there an empty white box.

i have tried a new profile, refreshing ff, even a complete clean firefox reinstall....but the problem remains. the only thing that helped was to do a system restore to before the update. just to check i then installed the ff 61.0.1 update again...and the problem came right back, resulting in the need for another system restore to before the update. the only change in the system was the ff update.

why would a firefox update affect other browsers like that? the save/open window functions perfectly fine if used from anywhere other than a web browser. so now im back at version 61.0 and all is working again....but it seems i cant update ff without this issue cropping up again.

im on windows 7.

thanks for any help.

HI if it persists on all browsers your system maybe older and low on ram to run things these days......yes is correct as 16gigs of ram is minimum now.

You can try this to see if things get better : Please Search for cmd.exe and when find please Right Click and Run as Administrator. Please Copy/Paste : sfc /scannow then reboot. ( sfc<space>/scannow ) Which will fix registry errors and try to fix errors in system files by using local files.

well i appreciate the attempt...but

16gb of ram as a "minimum"? most new computers offer a MAXIMUM of 16gb of ram...and thats going to be on the upper end of the price range....i have 12.

anyway...its got nothing to do with ram.

i have found the solution myself as posted here:

that issue sounds nearly identical to mine. and the solution has worked...for now, but this problem seems to be a bit tenacious.

cliffs notes version- perform a clean boot with all non ms services disabled...then re-enable the ones you want, reboot....poof.....problem solved.

now all i need to do is figure out why my new tab page is completely blank with no gear or anything even though i have it set to show me a bunch of stuff...but thats a separate issue.
