Sorting the contents of a folder is simple. Sorting the folders in the folder pane is not. That is why there is an add-on.

There are five options for folder view on the folder menu, have you tried them all?

Hi, I found an option to move thunderbird mail accounts manually without any add-ons. By opening file prefs.js and edit line by moving account up or down. user_pref("mail.accountmanager.accounts", "account16,account2,account6,account5,account9,account10,account13,account14,account15,account18,account19");

So now my account16 dispays first Thanks

When that breaks something, do not ask here for support. Just because you can does not make the arrangement "supported".

Your default account in SMTP settings is the account that is listed first, and only then if it is displayed in the folder pane to list at all.

  1. Numbered list item The add-in does not work.
  2. Numbered list item Selecting the default account does not work in current Thunderbird for legacy users who have years of email in the "special account" Local Folders, from back in the day when your only option for the first POP3 account was to use "Local Folders" to collect email.

I'd love to be able to have unique folders under my default account, but TB did not allow that at the time, and now I'm afraid it is too late to "move" a complex folder structure under that account. Besides, in account settings for that account, I have no choices in the pull-downs other than "Local Folders" or folders that belong to a different account.

So how do I "sort" my accounts when my Default account uses "Local Folders" special account as its email receptacle and the Default account name does not appear in the folders pane? So setting it as the default does not move "Local Folders" to the top of the accounts list.

Did you try the fixed version of Manually Sort Folders?

Yes, and now folders / accounts display in the appropriate panes. However, I want to change the position of just ONE folder in the TBird default sort, but in the pane showing that, I cannot move any folders. So I would have to go to one of the other sorts, and re-create the entire folder list in TBird default order with the one folder moved, is that right?

In the 'Sort folders' tab, select the account or Local Folders in the first drop-down, then 'Use a manually defined sort function' in the second drop-down, then use the up and down arrows.

I got the folders sorted in my "default account". But now I can't sort accounts so that the "special account", Local Folders, can be moved. On the account tab it appears in a text box under the account list. Using the "First account in the folder pane" control I can move it to the top of the list, otherwise it appears at the bottom. I would like to put it immediately after my default account since "Local Folders" is the only account in which one can have an "Outbox" for send-later emails, rather than having to scan to the bottom of the account/folder list to see if that mailbox contains any unsent messages.

Other than that, I got my folders sorted the way I wanted in my chosen default account, and was able to get that account at the top of Tbird's folder pane.

Thanks.

As you say, Local Folders can be either at the top or the bottom. There may be a way to edit prefs.js to force it in between accounts, but I haven't found a way.

The ability to manually sort folders disappeared in v60.4.0 so that when I *try* to specify "use a manually defined sort function" the choice of *where* to use such a function refuses to allow entry of anything. This is/was one of the most important functions of Thunderbird email handling.

The official version has been fixed to work in TB 60.
