I am aware that there is a help page but it does not answer my question. Also, I am not using a mobile system.

I am not using a mobile system.

Then why are you asking in the Firefox for Android forum?

I am not. I checked Web browser for windows...

Hi,

I assume you're talking about the number of tiles that are shown on the New Tab page  ?

Would you please take a look at the article Customize the New Tab page

What you may also like :

Type in the address bar about:config (press Enter) (promise to be careful, if asked)

Type in the search bar topsitescount

Look for the preference :

browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.topSitesCount

The value for this preference is '6' by default, it's set to '12' if you choose 'Show two rows' using the cogwheel in the top right of the New Tab page, but you can change it to any value you like e.g. 18 etc.

After you've changed a value, close and restart Firefox, in order for the change to take effect.

I've read Customize the New Tab page . It didn't help. What is a "Top Site"? It was the "about:config" I was trying to recall. Where is it documented?

I went to "browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.topSitesCount." It doesn't allow me to change the number. Where is this documented?

You can double-click a line on the about:config page or use the right-click context menu to modify the value of a pref.

Easiest is to use the Add button that you can find in the Edit window like described in the article.

It is currently not possible with Activity Stream enabled to drag a bookmark or history item to a tile. With Activity Stream enabled there is the "Add" button in the window that opens if you click Edit. This replaces the old way to drag an item to a tile. Edit will appear above the tiles when you hover a tile.

This is not a "documented" setting, but here is what I have observed:

  • When you first install a version of Firefox with the "Activity Stream" design for the new tab page, this is set to 6, which fills one row.
  • If you use the little sprocket icon on the new tab page to access the settings and click the box for showing two rows, the preference is changed from 6 to 12, which creates two rows.
  • If you double-click the preference in about:config, you can edit the value to a different number (multiples of 6 make the most sense, so 18, 24, 30, 36...).

What do you mean by not being allowed to change this?
  • After making a change, you'll need to reload (Ctrl+r) the new tab page before noticing extra blank boxes. Those should fill in over time.

"Two rows" is great. Is there a "Three rows"?

I couldn't change the 6 because I didn't click it twice.

How do I get rid of all the "Pocket" crap on the new tab page?

I didn't realize there was a change, only that it no longer worked. Where is the "change" documented?

That is also explained in the article Customize the New Tab page

When you're on the New Tab page, have you clicked the cog wheel yet  ?

If you want to totally get rid of Pocket, you can do this :

Type in the address bar about:config (press Enter)

Type in the search bar and look for the preference :

extensions.pocket.enabled

and set its value to false

(Remeber to close and restart Firefox)

How do I get rid of an icon on my new tap page? "Dismiss" just changes its appearance. It is still there taking up a space.

I don't want to delete the history. I just want it OFF my new tab page.

When you click 'Dismiss' you will be removing that tile.

Maybe if you'd relax, lean back, and read that article from the first to the last letter - maybe you'll find that it's not all that difficult ....

You asked earlier " What's a Top Site  ? " Top Sites are sites that you visit the most. When you want to visit one of those sites again, all you have to do is click on that tile ....

I may be adding to your confusion, but there is an extension you could use, that will enable you to set the New Tab page to whatever you like - of course you don't have to use it, just thought you might want to take a look at it :

Keep in mind that if you dismiss a page from a tile that Firefox stores this choice in a pref on the about:config page named browser.newtabpage.blocked, so if you would dismiss a lot of web pages then this pref can grow considerately and slow down creating the new tab page. I don't know if there is a limit for this pref and if Firefox purges sites automatically.

The new tab page has a cogwheel button in the top right corner that allows to select what to show and what to hide. So you can remove the checkbox for the Pocket section.

See my penultimate post .....

I'm not interested in "dismissing" pages. I want to remove the tile from my new tab page. There appears to be no way to do this.

I've read the article. You are wrong. When I dismiss a tile it does not go away. It is still there even after I restart Firefox. Furthermore, I do not want another huge list of dismissed tiles stored in my profile.

That's what 'dismiss' does : it removes the tile from the New Tab page.

And incase you don't want to see any tiles on the New Tab page : see the extension I mentioned .
